(WARNING: long post ahead!)
now that we are sort of settled, i can go back and fill you all in on our trek to California! colby's new company paid to move us (well, they are reimbursing us-- THANK YOU!) but we decided since we were paying up front, that we would move the most economical way-- by driving.
so we boxed up and loaded everything we owned into a 26 (yes, 26) foot, bright yellow penske truck, and hitched the jetta on an auto trailer on the back.
now any moving story has to have a few funnies, right? in typical fashion, before we put the jetta on the trailer we unhitched the trailer (duh) so that we had easy access to load the truck. logical, no? when we were done loading the truck we thought we would easily re-hitch the trailer and get the jetta on no problems. or so we thought... we just couldn't get the trailer hitch and the truck to cooperate.. it was getting late, it was cold, we were cranky, and it was misting/lightly raining. so we call my brother, who in hindsight wasn't the closest help, and he couldnt get to us in time, and well, we were cranky (obvs)
ANYWAYS, we FINALLY got the trailer to hitch to the truck. i suggested that we move the truck to the empty parking lot across the street (in the jehovah witness kingdom hall) to get the jetta on the trailer on level ground. that was pretty easy. what was not easy was getting the now 26 foot PLUS a jetta on an auto trailer OUT of the parking lot. i came around the corner to find colby/ the moving truck/the jetta jack knifed on a curb/tree. lets just say there were a lot of bad words and laughter. we FINALLY got the truck and trailer free and clear and ready for the next mornings departure. luckily the only thing harmed (other than the curb) was colby's ego. and luckily for us that was the only accident that happened the entire trip.
we got up super early on december 28th, grabbed some starbucks and hit the open road! our first nights stop was in tuscon, arizona.. a mere 12 hours if your going the speed limit.. or at least 65mph.. which the moving truck did not. we absolutely drove about 55mph the ENTIRE way. i was in the jeep with the dogs and colby was alone in the moving truck. thank goodness we did it that way- that was a LONG drive and im pretty sure i would have slept the whole way! we stopped in fort stockton for lunch, cruised through new mexico, and landed in arizona (tuscon) about an hour after i had hit my threshold. and a little after 2am. talk about a long day.. about 18 hours total.

that sign says 'welcome to new mexico' believe it or not. haha |

we got a great nights sleep (for real) and hot showers and hit the road bright and early. our next stop was bakersfield, california.. not near as far as it was the first day! other than stopping for gas a billion times, we really just wanted to get to bakersfield as soon as possible. we drove through palm springs/ coachella during sunset and it was seriously beautiful. we got to the hotel in bakersfield around 8pm which was a nice change from the night before. we even got a hot, non-fast food meal! it was awesome.
the next day we got up a little late (oops) for our short drive to san jose. the drive through rural california is seriously pretty. i think everyone should experience it once in their lives! we rolled into san jose around 4pm and quickly finished all our paperwork, and headed to see our new digs for the very first time.
i can't tell you how happy colby and i were when we saw how BIG 765 square feet really is! we were pleasantly surprised with all the space we had! we quickly started unloading the truck. between the two of us, we just wanted to get it done as quickly as possible. one of our new neighbors, dennis, came out to meet us, and he was seriously sent from someone above (colby says it was his grandpa) to help us. he was like, hey yall need help with the truck and trailer?! we were like um yes! not only did he hook his jetta wagon up to the jetta trailer, he found out that penske had a night drop, and drove us over there! he was seriously a huge help!! he said we reminded him of his kids and that if we ever needed anything, he was there. seriously dennis, thank you!!
we finally got some food (in-n-out burger- GROSS) and got to bed! like crazies we were off to tahoe in the morning for new years eve!
'til next time (and a new years recap!)
xoxo
