our hearts in san francisco.

it's no surprising news that we love san francisco. after all, we did get engaged there, and we have been into the city, 3 or 4 times since we moved here.

last weekend, we got to pick up some of colby's work buddies and take them on a small tour of the city. we had brunch in the mission at this place called 'dr teeth and the electric mayhem' (another Colby Louis LivingSocial deal) and it was SO GOOD. like  i'd go back good (albeit the service was TERRIBLE, but the food was yum!)
a jelly donut fried chicken sandwich. and tots. #jeah
we ventured to the ferry building for some blue bottle coffee. ya'll, this coffee, is SO damn good. we buy 2 bags of beans every time we go just in case we run out. truth. we hadn't been in the city together to wander since we were there in april 2011 when we got engaged. it was so fun being back, as a married couple, hanging out like almost locals, just enjoying the city. it brought back such great memories.
truth.
after we left the ferry building, coffee beans in hand, we took our friends to baker beach (like i said, we don't know how to get to many places in the city, but the places we do have AWESOME views!) they had never been to the city in day light and wanted to get some photos with the beach and bridge.

again, we hadn't been back to the scene of the crime where we got engaged (remember this?) It was kind of surreal being back. i was a little overwhelmed with memories of that day, and so happy that we live close enough to come back and visit, basically whenever we want!

wedding sneaks on the beach where we got engaged. cute, i know.

so, yea, kind of a pointless post about how awesome it is to live in the bay area just to make you all jealous (i kid!). we have seriously fallen in love with the area, all over again.
also, these pics have nothing to do with this post, but they were taken in the city, so yeah.

LOVE having my cousin here with me too! love you veronica!

new years 2013 in tahoe

yes, we know we are crazy.
less than 24 hours after driving into san jose, we hopped back into the car and headed north to lake tahoe for new years!

our friends kelly & andy had kelly's family's cabin for the holiday and had invited us up, and no matter how tired we were, we couldnt turn it down! plus, we didn't have a tv, couch, food, anything! and who wants to start the new year off like that?! not us!

the drive to tahoe from san jose is only about 4 hours which was a freakin' breeze after the previous days drives! the drive is so pretty. they got a lot of snow this year, so everything was white and beautiful.

we rung in the new year with kelly & andy and their friends tate and krystle. there was great food, great drinks, and great conversation. we roasted marshmallows and made s'mores, took a walk and discovered huge, sword-like icicles, relaxed, and counted down 'til midnight.

at midnight their neighbors set off fireworks and we all celebrated with a magnum of champagne.

new years day was so beautiful. we took a walk to the lake. omg talk about cold! the wind chill was pretty dang freezing! the dogs loved the snow and cold!

we didn't ski this trip, but can't wait to go back and hit the slopes!
hope you all had a great new years!

the trek to san jose

(WARNING: long post ahead!)
now that we are sort of settled, i can go back and fill you all in on our trek to California! colby's new company paid to move us (well, they are reimbursing us-- THANK YOU!) but we decided since we were paying up front, that we would move the most economical way-- by driving.
so we boxed up and loaded everything we owned into a 26 (yes, 26) foot, bright yellow penske truck, and hitched the jetta on an auto trailer on the back.

now any moving story has to have a few funnies, right? in typical fashion, before we put the jetta on the trailer we unhitched the trailer (duh) so that we had easy access to load the truck. logical, no? when we were done loading the truck we thought we would easily re-hitch the trailer and get the jetta on no problems. or so we thought... we just couldn't get the trailer hitch and the truck to cooperate.. it was getting late, it was cold, we were cranky, and it was misting/lightly raining. so we call my brother, who in hindsight wasn't the closest help, and he couldnt get to us in time, and well, we were cranky (obvs)

ANYWAYS, we FINALLY got the trailer to hitch to the truck. i suggested that we move the truck to the empty parking lot across the street (in the jehovah witness kingdom hall) to get the jetta on the trailer on level ground. that was pretty easy. what was not easy was getting the now 26 foot PLUS a jetta on an auto trailer OUT of the parking lot. i came around the corner to find colby/ the moving truck/the jetta jack knifed on a curb/tree. lets just say there were a lot of bad words and laughter. we FINALLY got the truck and trailer free and clear and ready for the next mornings departure. luckily the only thing harmed (other than the curb) was colby's ego. and luckily for us that was the only accident that happened the entire trip.
we got up super early on december 28th, grabbed some starbucks and hit the open road! our first nights stop was in tuscon, arizona.. a mere 12 hours if your going the speed limit.. or at least 65mph.. which the moving truck did not. we absolutely drove about 55mph the ENTIRE way. i was in the jeep with the dogs and colby was alone in the moving truck. thank goodness we did it that way- that was a LONG drive and im pretty sure i would have slept the whole way! we stopped in fort stockton for lunch, cruised through new mexico, and landed in arizona (tuscon) about an hour after i had hit my threshold. and a little after 2am. talk about a long day.. about 18 hours total.
that sign says 'welcome to new mexico' believe it or not. haha
hotel dogs!
we got a great nights sleep (for real) and hot showers and hit the road bright and early. our next stop was bakersfield, california.. not near as far as it was the first day! other than stopping for gas a billion times, we really just wanted to get to bakersfield as soon as possible. we drove through palm springs/ coachella during sunset and it was seriously beautiful. we got to the hotel in bakersfield around 8pm which was a nice change from the night before. we even got a hot, non-fast food meal! it was awesome.
the next day we got up a little late (oops) for our short drive to san jose. the drive through rural california is seriously pretty. i think everyone should experience it once in their lives! we rolled into san jose around 4pm and quickly finished all our paperwork, and headed to see our new digs for the very first time.

i can't tell you how happy colby and i were when we saw how BIG 765 square feet really is! we were pleasantly surprised with all the space we had! we quickly started unloading the truck. between the two of us, we just wanted to get it done as quickly as possible. one of our new neighbors, dennis, came out to meet us, and he was seriously sent from someone above (colby says it was his grandpa) to help us. he was like, hey yall need help with the truck and trailer?! we were like um yes! not only did he hook his jetta wagon up to the jetta trailer, he found out that penske had a night drop, and drove us over there! he was seriously a huge help!! he said we reminded him of his kids and that if we ever needed anything, he was there. seriously dennis, thank you!!

we finally got some food (in-n-out burger- GROSS) and got to bed! like crazies we were off to tahoe in the morning for new years eve!

'til next time (and a new years recap!)

i think we are going to like it here.

its been a little over a week since we moved in our cozy little apartment. in fact, its so cozy, that last night colby said "if our apartment was a hotel room it would be HUGE!". no lie. its actually bigger than what we expected, so I don't know what he's complaining about!

anyways, we successfully fixed our internet and our cable works, so we feel like functioning humans again. the bikes finally made their way from our living room to the bike storage room. we also FINALLY ordered our couch! we splurged and bought the couch we fell in love with a couple weeks ago. we shopped and shopped and we kept comparing everything to the C&B couch, so last night we broke down, and purchased it! and we can't wait! y'all. IT. IS. SO. COMFY!! we also got the chair and a half and the storage ottoman.. and to top if off, we have some jonathan adler pillows coming as well!
as soon as we order/ find some barstools and hang all our art, we will finally feel settled. im growing to love our little home for the next 15 (+?) months!

there are some things that are taking some getting used to.. the mountains in the distance. they are beautiful, but im so used to the flat/rolling hills in austin. the street lights are yellow. it freaks me out when im driving. i guess i'll get used to it. there are no overhead lights in our apartment except for in the kitchen and bathroom. hello lamps. there is also alcohol, everywhere. like target, the gas station, grocery stores, everywhere. oh, and its cold. all the time. im so used to it being cold for a couple of days, then it gets warm. not here. cold. cold. cold. but i love it!

cheers!
